I was really surprised to learn that one of my all-time favorite cartoonists is the author of the book on which the movie Mars Needs Moms is based. When I think of Berkeley Breathed, I think of Opus, Bill the Cat and all of the loony Bloom County characters I love so much. I don’t think of him as a children’s book author; however, he has created several children’s books including Mars Needs Moms. When you come right down to it, who better to write from a child’s point of view?
In Mars Needs Moms, Milo doesn’t get why people think moms are such a wonderful thing. After all, they make you do things you don’t want to do, like eat loathsome broccoli. Yuck! When Martians kidnap his mom to take care of them, he has to rethink this whole mom thing and realizes he may have been a bit blind to other aspects to his mom that are pretty neat. I fell in love with this very heartwarming story, so even though I don’t normally write about children’s stories – I’ve got to share this one just in case you’re looking for a great gift for a child you know.
I’d love to hear your comments on the movie and/or the book!
